Biography: Derek Maki'sofficial biography
Derek Maki has
been acting since the age of 7. He is from Massachusetts, where he
graduated high school and college earning his associate's degree
in broadcasting and telecommunications. Derek says "I
felt that majoring in that course would help me, as a serious actor,
better understand what happens with the behind the scenes aspect of
television or film."
While in college Derek developed Coolwaters
Productions and directed his
first 3 independent films, including Rescue
Me(shot for a Drug Free
America charity) and Shorts (a film containing 3
mini-stories relating to slapstick comedy, horror and a super hero
parody).
After
graduating from college Derek made the big move to Hollywood, where he
currently resides and continues his acting career. With years of
frustration building due to the lack of instant stardom (as it often is
with actors) Derek decided to resurrect Coolwaters Productions, which
is now producing independent films building on the company's slogan,
"Don’t wait for Hollywood to make your film. Do it yourself"!
Derek
has
studied
Improv
acting
for
7
years.
He
has
also appeared as a
stand-up comic at the Ha Ha Café and The Comedy Store.
He had the crowds laughing when he took center stage during a sketch
comedy show performing many characters. He stole the show during a
sketch he wrote and starred in called The Customer is
always right… Bullsh*t!
“It had me running around the stage dressed as an old and mean woman;
screaming at department store customers who ask the stupidest
questions. I had never done drag before, it was a blast!” Derek
also
portrayed a flamboyant gay character in Fred Dekom’s comedy play
Square One.
Derek is very pleased
with the current status of his career. By taking the "bull by the
horns" he earned a role in Leprechaun 6: Back to tha Hood (gaining him
membership in the Screen Actors Guild). He can currently be seen at film festivals in
his own award-winning independent film Instant
Dads (in which he
serves as writer/director/star). And, in other festivals, he can been
seen starring in three films Creature Story, The
Closet, and My
Cousin's
Keeper.
Derek has several new
projects in development, including a dream project with his friend
actor Warwick Davis called Leprechaun 7 and a TV series
pilot called Just
Franklin (learn more at www.justfranklin.tv)! He also
serves as co-writer and editor of the comic I, of the Wolf, which is currently
available on the convention circuit! Visit www.iofthewolf.com
