Overwhelmed by his parents death, Jacob Jankowski (Pattinson), jumps onto a passing train,  and ends up joining a circus.  Despite having left his veterinary studies behind, he serves as the vet for his new home, which is circus struggling to endure the Great Depression. He meets Marlena (Witherspoon), the star of the equestrian act and her husband August (Waltz), the twisted animal trainer. He also meets Rosie, an elephant who seems untrainable -at first.
